Ten years ago this week, The New York Times introduced the Upshot, a section devoted to explaining “politics, policy and everyday life.” That’s a wide scope, by design. WHY WE’RE HEREWe’re exploring how America defines itself one place at a time. In Utah, a one-room schoolhouse has helped preserve the family atmosphere of a cult-favorite ski town. They come for the powder snow, which regularly tops lists of the deepest and lightest in the country. They discover the simplicity and warmth of life in a town at the dead end of a box canyon with a year-round population of roughly 300. Young people who had children left because there was no school, and the closest school district would not send a bus up the narrow canyon road.

Ms. Haley’s reception has been mixed, hosting fewer attendees at events in some of the more conservative strongholds crucial to a victory on Saturday. When Mr. DeSantis was a House member, he became a star among conservatives through appearances on Fox News. Fox News hosted Mr. Trump just this week for a live town hall from Iowa. To that end, Mr. DeSantis used his line about Mr. Trump’s Praetorian Guard during an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” before deploying it again on Friday. As for other conservative media outlets, Newsmax — often friendly to Mr. Trump — aired a Christmas special about Mr. DeSantis and his family late last year.
